Employees remain weak link with Internet security

Diane McClain, operations manager of the cyber security division at the Newberry Group, stressed the importance of employee training to ensure that information can be seen by only those who need to see it, protecting it from "the bad guys."

Newberry Group, which began with contracts to the federal government to staff data centers, expanded from information technology to cyber security in 2005. This element of its business has been growing ever since. The company, based in St. Charles, now investigates breaches, examining hacks with digital forensics and turning evidence over to law enforcement.

McClain's focus has remained consulting with companies to find and repair holes in their networks. She said it was balancing security measures with availability — the ease of access by authorized users — that presents the most difficulty because it introduces a human element to the equation.

Newberry security experts help revise CISSP exam

Two members of Newberry’s elite Security Practice helped revise exam questions for one of the most prestigious Information Security certifications in the industry.

Dr. Rich Berry, Senior Computer Systems Analyst, and Kent Fujiwara, Senior Computer System Security Specialist, were selected by the International Information Systems Security Certification Consortium, Inc. (ISC)2 to participate in the evaluation and development of new questions for the Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) certification qualifying exam June 13-15 in Washington, D.C.

Dr. Berry and Fujiwara both hold the prestigious CISSP certification. It is a globally-recognized, objective measure of competence and achievement, demonstrating competence in 10 areas referred to as the Common Body of Knowledge (CBK). The CBK domains are: Access Control; Application Security; Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery Planning; Cryptography; Information Security and Risk Management; Legal, Regulations, Compliance and Investigations; Operations Security; Physical (Environmental) Security; Security Architecture and Design; and Telecommunications and Network Security.

The Newberry Group, Inc. has hired Phillip Justice, Executive Director, Cyber Security Solutions & Services to head Newberry’s respected Cyber Security Practice. Mr. Justice has had 21 years of information technology and security experience gained in highly secure and regulated environments in the federal and intelligence community.

The Cyber Security Practice’s goal is to ensure our employees have a myriad of experiences; solid aptitude and education; knowledge of methodologies; and tools available to them across the company. Newberry cyber training director teaches anti-terrorism course to Philippines law enforcement

Joseph Church, Director of Cyber Training at The Newberry Group, Inc., recently taught an anti-cyber terrorism course to officers in the Philippines National Police at the Philippine Public Safety College in Taguig City, Philippines. Mr. Church, who serves as a computer forensics expert instructor and subject matter expert for the U.S. Department of State, led the cyber forensics team that taught the course.

The course focused on Identification and Seizure of Digital Evidence, equipping police officers with the proper knowledge and skills to handle vital evidence related to computers and electronics storage devices, as reported in Manila’s The Daily Tribune. Aside from his work for the Department of State, Mr. Church works closely with the Newberry Cyber Security Division to develop and grow Newberry’s Cyber Training competency, with an initial focus on development and delivery of Digital Forensic training capability across all markets. Mr. Church’s professional background includes more than 15 years of Information Technology and digital forensics experience with an emphasis on digital investigations and training. He was a Senior Instructor for the U.S. Department of State’s Global Anti-Terrorism Assistance Cyber Training Program, a track lead for the Defense Cyber Crime Investigative Training Academy, and a Detective in the Prince George’s County Police Department in Maryland, where he performed digital forensic case work with the Federal Bureau of Investigations.
